Understanding the consequences of victory amongst sport spectators: The mediating role of BIRGing.
2016
Prior work on the relationships between team identification and spectators' reactions to one's team victory has largely neglected the potential effects of mediating variables. In this research, we proposed that the process of Basking in Reflected Glory [BIRGing - the tendency to reduce the distance between oneself and one's team; Cialdini, R. B., Bordon, R. J., Thorne, A., Walker, M. R., Freeman, S., & Sloan, L. R. (1976). Basking in reflected glory: Three (football) field studies. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 34, 366-375] would lead spectators to almost take ownership of victories and share its benefits, thereby impacting their sense of national belonging in a positive man…
Meritare il perdono, meritare la memoria: equilibrio del discorso e verdetto della storia nella pro Marcello di Cicerone
2017
In the pro Marcello Cicero focuses on the merits of Marcellus and Caesar. The Marcellus’ virtutes (in continuity with his familiar tradition) confirm that his return may not represent a danger; his exile indeed is a real damage to the Republic. The theme of memory then allows Cicero to meditate on Caesar's politics: only defending the integrity of the state with his clementia, the statesman will obtain glory and immortality. The issue about the responsibilities of the Pompeian pars is also examined: many people have followed Pompeius not for ideological choices but only because of an error. Then Caesar must be able to propose a ‘good’ victory, or, in other words, an ethical and political mo…
Basking in Reflected Glory and Blasting
2007
This study examines, in soccer fanzines, two identity-management strategies—basking in reflected glory (BIRGing) and blasting—of two groups of highly identified soccer fans with allegiance to the same team. Results show strong support for the BIRG phenomenon among both ultra fan groups but little evidence of the blasting phenomenon among either group. The implications of these findings are discussed in regard to social identity management among sports fans.
Peripapillary Staphyloma and Asymmetric Morning Glory Anomaly
2006
We report a patient with concomitant occurrence of peripapillary staphyloma and morning glory anomaly. The morning glory anomaly presented with an optic nerve head with oblique entrance, located on one side of the peripapillary staphyloma, giving an unusually asymmetric and previously undescribed appearance to the abnormality. The optical coherence tomography provided useful information about the shape and deepness of the peripapillary staphyloma and disclosed a retinal detachment not appreciated ophthalmoscopically.
